Nine Small Monuments

Project Description

Nine Small Monuments, 2009, 24k gold leaf and india ink on hydrocal, dimensions variable (here 55 in x 12 in x 10 in)

Some people like to retain the magic but I’ve generally been a revealer so I’ll just tell you upfront that the 9 Small Monuments, which are made of Hydro-cal with gold leaf and India ink, were cast from a select group of doggy chew toys. I didn’t have any pets at the time and maybe that’s why the first object I found, the vertical stack of three orb shapes, made me think I had stumbled on to a mysterious obelisk in miniature. I saw it immediately as an object fit for contemplation yet in defiance of understanding, a la Kubrick, but the red rubber material needed a significant re-working.

When I see something that sparks an idea I have to find other examples before I know I have a project in hand. I was delighted to discover other eternal forms waiting for me at the pet store and in catalogs. Now it seems it may have been a case of right place/right time. When I go shopping for toys for my dog I only find the Kong and a version of the latticework sphere. The other shapes are long gone, lost in the churn of consumer culture past. Though, as with several other projects, the moment has been documented and preserved here…
